QUT and UQ go head-to-head at TechnologyOne’s The Big Game
The decades-old rivalry between the University of Queensland (UQ) and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) came to a head at TechnologyOne’s annual The Big Game event this week, with QUT taking out the top prize.
Held at the leading Australian software provider’s headquarters in Brisbane, the gaming tournament saw a turnout of more than 160 university students, graduates and interns interested in rubbing shoulders with TechnologOne’s R&D teams.
In what started out as a friendly rivalry between QUT and TechnologyOne gamers, The Big Game is now in its fourth year and invites both Queensland uni’s to play it out against each other. Organised and run by TechnologyOne, the event gives students a look inside the company’s culture and innovative workspaces.
This year’s clash featured a gaming pentathlon, concluding with an all-out laser tag battle.
UQ captain Cameron Aavik said the event was one of the most highly anticipated for technology students in the uni’s Computer Society.
“Everyone in the Computer Society is really involved and we love having these events so we can get together, have a bit of fun and meet some great people,” he said.
“There’s a lot of students that attend this event who are looking for jobs as they graduate, so it’s cool to get a glimpse inside what TechnologyOne is like, what the offices are like and what kind of perks are on offer. To see an office like TechnologyOne’s really excites people, it seems like a really great place to work.”
Meanwhile, QUT’s captain Matthew Miller added: “The Big Game is a really fun event. It’s a great networking opportunity and really impressive to hear about the scale of the problems that TechnologyOne is solving - it’s software that’s international.”
The Big Game is a highlight of TechnologyOne’s recruitment drive, with applications for its grad program closing in April. The company onboards upwards of 20 new STEM graduates each year, and fills all open R&D positions throughout the year with grads when possible.
Current TechnologyOne graduate employees are involved in setting up and running the event, giving students an opportunity to hear first-hand about life at TechnologyOne from their peers.
CEO Edward Chung said: “We’re an innovative, forward thinking company. Key to that innovation is engaging with Australia’s best and brightest young talent.
“Not only do initiatives like The Big Game ensure we remain at the forefront of the industry, but it also ensures we are investing in the success of the IT industry as a whole. Australia’s knowledge industries will be the future of our economy, and it is vital that businesses invest in the industry, universities and talent.
“The students that come along to The Big Game are our future industry leaders. It’s exciting to consider the future contribution they could make to the IT industry and TechnologyOne.
“Working at TechnologyOne would provide them with a huge opportunity to establish their career in a well-known, local business with a history of global success.”
TechnologyOne’s young talent programs have received industry appreciation, with the intern program recognised as one of Australia’s best in Interns Australia’s National Fair Internship Pledge (NFIP), and its grad program ranking in the top 20 graduate employers in Australia by AAGE. The company was also named an Australian Employer of Choice in the 2015 and 2016 Australian Business Awards.
